Choosing the Right Materials for Your Home Project

Choosing the Right Materials for Your Home Project

Materials Matter More Than You Think

The materials you choose for a home project determine how it looks, how long it lasts, and how much maintenance it needs. Spending a little more on the right material often saves money over the life of the project.

Flooring

Hardwood

Classic and timeless. Can be refinished multiple times over decades. Oak and maple are popular in the Minneapolis area. Higher upfront cost, but outlasts almost every alternative.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Waterproof, durable, and much more affordable than hardwood. Modern LVP is remarkably realistic. Excellent choice for basements, kitchens, and high-traffic areas.

Tile

Best for bathrooms and entryways. Porcelain tile is more durable and water-resistant than ceramic. Budget for quality installation — tile work is only as good as the subfloor prep and grout work.

Countertops

Quartz

Engineered stone that's virtually maintenance-free. No sealing required, consistent color throughout the slab, and extremely durable. The most popular countertop choice for good reason.

Granite

Natural stone with unique patterns. Requires annual sealing but lasts indefinitely with proper care. Slightly less consistent than quartz — every slab is different.

Butcher Block

Warm and natural. Works well in rustic and farmhouse kitchens. Requires regular oiling and is susceptible to water damage near sinks. Best used as an accent rather than the primary countertop.

Siding

Fiber Cement (Hardie Board)

Resists rot, insects, fire, and extreme weather. Holds paint well. The most durable siding option available for Minneapolis's climate. Higher installation cost than vinyl, but much longer lifespan.

Vinyl

Most affordable option. Low maintenance and decent durability. Can warp in extreme heat and become brittle in extreme cold. Quality varies significantly between manufacturers.

Engineered Wood (LP SmartSide)

Looks like real wood with better durability. Treated to resist moisture, fungal decay, and insects. Good middle ground between fiber cement and vinyl in both cost and performance.

The Quality-Cost Balance

The cheapest option almost never provides the best value. But neither does the most expensive. The sweet spot is mid-to-upper-range products from reputable manufacturers, installed correctly. Proper installation often matters more than the material itself.
